Akselos named as TOP innovator in the Energy Transition by German Energy Agency and World Energy Council

SET, an initiative by the German Energy Agency (DENA) and the World Energy Council (WEC), has named a leading digital twin developer among the top 100 young companies and new projects contributing to the energy transition.

Digital transformation company, Akselos, was recognised in the top 100 list thanks to the company’s ability to reduce the cost of wind energy, and to help secure the stability of supply with next generation digital technology.

The Swiss headquartered MIT spin-out has combined its engineering simulation technology with sensors, big data analytics and machine learning to create predictive digital twins. The patented tech seeks to help streamline the design and build of turbines, support structures and transmission systems to help lower the cost to consumers. It also optimises operations throughout the lifecycle by offering operators real time access to the condition of the assets, as well as predictions about their future condition.

Commenting on the award, CEO Thomas Leurent said: “Technology is nothing without a purpose and ours has always been to contribute towards a sustainable future. Technology development is central to accelerating the energy transition and the SET is a crucial platform to help focus innovation in the right areas, so we can make world-wide low carbon energy a reality. We are very pleased to be named in the SET 100 list and look forward to working with the other innovators and organisations in the network to support the transition.”

Akselos has already been recognised as a game-changer in the offshore oil and gas industry, having created the world’s largest predictive digital twin of a 90,000 ton FPSO. The company’s MIT licensed product is the only technology on the market capable of simulating twins of large-scale structures, with the level of detail and accuracy needed to enable predictive maintenance.

DENA and the WEC launched the sustainable energy initiative at the annual UN Climate Change Conference in 2016.

The SET 2018 Tech Festival takes place on 16 April in Berlin. The one-day event acts as the summit of the SET initiative, enabling participants to access a wide range of outstanding entrepreneurs and start-ups that are working to transform energy systems of the future.

Akselos is a digital transformation company headquartered in Switzerland, with operations in Europe, the USA and South East Asia. The company has created the world’s first predictive digital twin for large-scale assets, to help protect critical infrastructure. The engineering simulation technology is the fastest and most advanced of its kind, and is responsible for modelling the world’s largest digital twin.

The technology has the power to revolutionise heavy industry, and pushes the boundaries of what modern engineering and data analytics can achieve. Developed by some of the world’s best minds, the MIT-licensed technology builds something far beyond the capability of a conventional digital twin, allowing operators to not only monitor an asset’s condition in real time, but also to see the future.

Akselos’ is based at EPFL’s Innovation Park in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Innovation Park hosts technology driven start-ups and established companies in an inspiring environment, with access to cutting-edge research and a large network of dynamic entrepreneurs. Integrated into EPFL, a leading technical university and research institute, the Innovation Park is connected to one of the world’s most exciting scientific communities.

Start Up Energy Transition (SET) is a leading international platform supporting innovation in energy transition. SET is implemented with the conviction that sustainable energy solutions and mitigating climate change is directly linked to a bridge between inventive business models and political will. Powered by the German Energy Agency (dena) in cooperation with the World Energy Council (WEC), our initiative connects start-ups, international venture capitalists & investors, and partners in the public sector. As a global platform, we link like-minded people from various fields to promote innovation and to make global energy transition a success.

The SET platform is comprised of the annual SET Award and SET Tech Festival. The SET Award is an international competition for start-ups and young companies worldwide who are working on ideas affecting global energy transition and climate change. There are six different categories applicants can present their projects in, all with the aim of clean energy promotion. The three most promising start-ups in each category will pitch their business ideas at our annual summit – the SET Tech Festival – which brings our impressive network together in the spring.
